Fisherman's Wharf
Barb's Fish and Chips is my brother's absolute favorite place to eat whenever he's in town. I think it has to do with the fact that we're eating fish from the ocean on the ocean. That has to be the reason because the food is outrageously expensive and disgustingly greasy. It's a bizarre fit where my brother is concerned because he is a bit of a my body is my temple kind of guy.
For my parents fiftieth wedding anniversary we all met here in Victoria. My brother really wanted to eat at Barb's one night so we told my parents we would be eating fish right on the ocean. I knew we kind of goofed at the description when we picked them up and they were all dressed up fancy. My father was in a suit and tie for crying out loud!
My father felt compelled to tell anyone he met on the docks how his kids had surprised him and the wife with this very special dinnerfor their 50th wedding anniversary. My mom would then have to chime in with, "When they said we would be eating fish on the ocean, we didn't think they literally meant we would be eating with the fishies."
It was a great time. My nephews thought it was awesome. They were completely mesmerized by the houseboats and kept running up and down the docks trying to decide which one they wanted to live in.
I'm not sure my mom was all that impressed when a fishing boat brought in its catch of the day and dumped into a big bin right beside the shack to be weighed and gutted!

That's hilarious! Its always the funny, charming stories that make it into our memories, isn't it? I remember once for my brothers birthday my mom started making milkshakes, but she forgot to put the lid on the blender. It went everywhere. Its still talked about today :)
Your parents are troopers!
That's crazy about the big dump of fish next to them, but at least they could testify to the freshness of dinner.
Allison, that is so true. It's all those quirky things like blender disasters that we remember forever.
Barbara, if you look at the picture the bin where they weigh and gut the fish is on the right hand side of the building. I guess they figure it's all part of the "ambiance" of the place!
Yeah, LOL, you want fresh! :[]
That is too funny...too bad you didn't have pics of them all dressed up. I'm sure the expressions would've been priceless.
We have a great place too...Dave's - it's the place on the pier in my bike pics. I don't eat there anymore...like you said, way too greasy. But the rep is that it's the best in town. (Dad's a fisherman so all my fish comes straight from him)
Dogga, I kind of think you would fit right in down on the docks considering your stint at the pub you did. I have the feeling you'd be great at chatting up all the tourists.
Deb, a picture would have been good. My family has never been big on taking pictures or once we do getting them into a photograph album. Our pictures all end up in shoeboxes.
Oooh that is fresh!!! It sounds like fun to me! Actually Im kind of hungry now. I haven't really eaten much in the last day or so except booster juice smoothies. Mm fishie fish!! The photos are gorgeous too! Hey, did you take any of the inside of the place?
Mellowlee, the shop is closed right not until mid-March but when it reopens I will take more shots. You can't actually get inside because it's just a kiosk type stand. Glad your appetite is starting to come back.
Nice little story. I'd chose fish and chips over steak. Crazy?
wish I had spent more time in Victoria, it was ferry, bus, club, bus, ferry.
I didn't even have time to see my family that is out there...drag...
Busterp, not crazy at all. I would take salmon or halibut anyday over a steak.
Junky, hopefully someday you can return and spend time wandering the city and visiting family. We don't have the best nightlife here I'm afraid but if you like to walk or bike it's a great city for that. Coffee shops and bakeries, now there is something we have in abundance.
