Oak Bay Marina

The first two pictures are of the same shot I just cropped it so you could see the blue heron better. I actually have the man in the little boat to thank for the photo. His coming around the rocks startled the birds and I just happened to snap as the blue heron was taking flight. I would have loved to have been closer but I don't think one should infringe on the rights of wildlife.

The next two shows one of the seals that hangs about Oak Bay Marina. I know it looks as though I'm taking pictures within a marine park or something but I'm not. There's four seals that hang about the marina waiting for tourists to feed them. It's a difficult issue because no one has trained the seals they just learned on their own that if they act cute they'll get free fish without all the hassle of trying to catch it themselves.

Oak Bay Marina used to have a whale pool. It was the most horrendous sight I have ever seen. They had 3 whales, Tillicum, Haida and Nuka, living in a pool that was maybe three times their body length. I went there with two students and I'm telling you it was the hardest thing ever not to cry in front of them. I was so angry and appalled. The owners weren't even pretending to try and make an environment suitable for them. Thank goodness they have since closed it down. That place was a definite black mark against Victoria.

We went to the whale pool because they had worked on writing a book called, "Monster Goes to Sealand!" The book was fashioned after the monster series a fabulous series written for children with reading difficulties.

I dug out the book and even all these years later I still think they did a fabulous job.

OMG, that's the "shot that got away" on me. Fantastic...good job.

The seal one is so cute...we have them here too. An awful tidbit - I saw one awhile ago and went and took a picture..then I realized it was floating/dead. Ew, awful. Poor thing.

We have so much here, don't we? In the summer we have huge sea lions that climb up on the rocks and bask in the sun...I'll get a pic one day. They used to scare me when I was in the water getting ready to water ski. Once as I steadied my ski friends were pointing behind me and I looked to see one's head popped up...RIGHT BEHIND ME!! I yelled "hit it" so fast it made heads spin. Outta there. (We also have swans that they keep trying to kick out but they always return...have some pics of them).

Sorry....you know. Long comment (again!)

and the entire point of all that is that your pictures are absolutely unbelievable

(and I'm glad that the Vcr aquarium decided to stop keeping killer whales there...isn't it awful seeing them so out of their element?)

Deb, ew on the dead seal. I can see how that could easily happen though.

We are so spoiled here. Sometimes I am just amazed I live in such a gorgeous area. Now that I have a camera I can't wait for spring to arrive to snap lots of pictures of daffodils and tulips! Look out blog readers I'm on a rampage with this thing! haha

p.s. to Deb For some reason I can access my own blog but I can't seem to access any others. I finally made it onto Mels but blogger is once again being snarky!

Aren't a Heron's wing span just massive, truly superb.
There is one that lives close to where I live and you can get really close to it nowadays; I guess it's got used to people.

Why are there cars flying in the air in the top left childrens picture? LOL :0)

Dogga, the blue heron is an awesome bird. As for the flying cars I think it's supposed to be a parking lot! Either that or they're magical cars.

Lovely pictures. Sigh, I miss the West coast.

I agree, I'd rahter hit zoom on the camera than infringe on the wildlife.

Those seals are so lovely - they're all spotty and everything! It would be fun to be a seal, almost as fun as an otter.

I love that book that your students did! The pictures are so amazing. How old were these kids?

Allison, I really hope you are able to make it out to the West Coast in April. April is a gorgeous time around here with all the daffodils, tulips and irises!

Mellowlee, tourists - terrorists! haha Sometimes we're about as fond of tourists as we are terrorists.

Barbara, I think they were around 12. One of them in particular loved to draw and colour. The boy I ended up teaching for 8 years! He has now graduated from college. He is the poster child for what one can accomplish with hard work!

Those pictures are gorgeous. They make me miss Seattle.

Johnny Yen, Seattle is a nice city. I get there about once a year and always enjoy it. I can't imagine not living on the ocean even though I grew up on the prairies.
