Weekend at a Farm

Took a three day weekend to head up island to a friend's farm. It was a great time even if I am most definitely not a farm girl. Give me the city any day. I thrive on city life.

Taking a three day weekend means I am feeling a little behind in everything. I will get back to making the rounds in the next couple of days and catch up on all the news of my blog buddies. In the meantime I hope everyone had a great weekend and all is well.

On Saturday morning I looked out my bedroom window to find this! Unbelievable. Turns out they live in what is known as the snow belt.

It snowed all day Saturday but by Sunday it was starting to melt.

This is Scruff their "barn" cat. They rescued Scruff when they found him near death on their property.
As you can see poor old Scruff is most definitely not living in the barn and is living the high life as is the right of any cat.
Scruff still loves the outdoors and rolling around in the snow! He also enjoys rolling around in the mud and following his owners around when they feed the other animals.

This is Starlight, the llama. I was a little leery of him at first because he likes to put his head on your shoulder and that kind of freaked me out at first. But, by the last day I was able to stand still long enough to allow him to give me a smooch on my shoulder.

My friend raised sheep when she was young and ever since I have known her she has wanted to buy property up island where she could have enough land to once again raise sheep. She is now getting her wish and couldn't be happier.

While there we made honey candles. Truth be told other than cutting off the tops of the packages of the new molds I pretty much just stood over and watched my friend make them. I got to take my candles home with me and in the next couple of days I will take a picture of them all displayed out where you can see them better. My friends are into beekeeping in a very big way and have 150 hives.

Along with the sheep they have bunnies. But don't get too attached because the next time you see fluffy he'll likely be on a plate with green beans and potatoes!

The snow pictures are awesome!

Scruff is a really cool cat, he seems to be so friendly.

I'm not a big fan of llama, i don't trust them, that's why I'm really happy that my dad bought goats rather than llamas a couple of years ago.

It seems that it was a great weekend and that you enjoyed it!

Evelyne, hi. How was your reading break? I must admit I don't trust the llama much myself. I prefer to keep my distance.

A three-day weekend is a wonderful excuse for not blogging, I'd say!

Look at Scruffy! He has a mane! I love your description of how he "is living the high life as is the right of any cat". I couldn't agree more.

Cats, llamas, sheep, bunnies - what an idylic sounding life. Except for the bees - I've been told by one too many beekepers that "they won't sting you" HA! Lies!
But I'm with you on needing the city. Three days in the country is enough.

Great pictures! Sounds like you had a fabulous weekend.

I love Llamas!! Any animal that will randomly spit at you to show disagreement gets praise from me.

Oh, the poor rabbit. Farm life is not good for a vegetarian.

Leazwell, Scruff kind of snagged my heart I must admit. His tawny colour is gorgeous and he loves to be petted and swooned over.

Barbara, farm life always strikes me as a lot of hard work! Believe me I stay far, far away from the bees! It was so nice to wander the city streets this morning and stop in for my Starbucks coffee and free newspaper. I am just a lazy city girl.

Allison, no farm life is definitely not where a vegetarian wants to be. Odd that you would like the snottiness of a llama but not the snarkiness of a cat. Go figure. Well, what can one expect of a dog person. :)

i am jealous! being a confirmed city gal, i tend to get farm envy a lot. :)

i love scruff! but i too, am not very trusting of llamas.

allison, your llama comment killed me. i may have to rethink my position on them.

That looks like so much fun. I had a friend with alpacas and they were more skittish. I can't beleive the llama wanted to rest it's head on your shoulder.

What a great adventure for you!! That pic of Scruff sleeping on the chair is just too cute.

Llamas...hhhhmmm, I've with Evelyne. I don't trust them 100%.

And the poor bunny :(

I couldn't be a farmer.

I KNEW I'd get flack for the llama comment...lol. Cats are less direct I guess, its all about the games ;)

668, farm envy! Not me. It's fun for a weekend but city life is where it's at. I wanted to take Scruff home!

Justacoolcat, I must say Starlight is one friendly llama. Starlight is the first llama I have ever met so I don't have much to go by only their reputation as great spitters!

Deb, I could never be a farmer either. If I need a bit of country I just head to the park!

Allison, it is pretty funny that anyone would think that spitting could be considered an interesting trait!!

dunno about rabbit stew though :-]

Boo, that Scruff was a sweetie. He's just like a little lion. Fluffy the bunny rabbit will have to be eaten not in my presence!

Aaaww. I really liked this post Toccata. I needed it. Today has really been kicking my ass.

Your post reminded me of my friends little farm in Alberta. She has various furry critters and just the thought of her and her farm makes me happy.

Kelly, you get to lie in the sun and I get snow. From where I'm sitting that does not seem fair! Sure hope you had a great time.

Slaygirl, sorry to hear your day was not a good one. Sure hope you are having yourself a much better night!

REALLY nice post. The pictures made it flow. I felt like I was there. When I was a kid on our farm, we used to have cows we called by name. MaryEllen was one I remember. And yes, some got butchered. You just got used to it.

One thing I really do remember was raising chickens(we only did for a year or two) and once full grown, chopping their heads off(usually we didn't name them)so we could dress and freeze them for food. Axe to the neck on a wood stump.Chop. Even without a head, some would fly around, spattering blood. It was kind of creepy.

Busterp, I have seen chickens get their heads chopped off in Saskatchewan. Not pleasant.

OH WOW! those photos are so amazing! Scruff is an adorable cat! I love Scruff!! And the sheep look like they are KISSING, so cute! Im glad you had a good weekend!!!

Toccata said...

Mellowlee, I wanted to sneak Scruff into my suitcase and take him home!

Toccata said...

Mellowlee, I just got an email from my friend and she said Starlight the llama gave her a spitful of grain right in the face today! Those llamas are sneaky!

668 aka neighbour of the beast said...

of course, i have never spent any time on a farm!

haha.. grain in the face!

668, we need to get you to a farm. That would surely cure you of farm envy. By the way not to be a nag or anything but I still am waiting to hear about Goober and the pizza in the school yard story!!

I do believe I see a bit of Maine Coon in Scruff... maybe he's related to my two!!

Women on the verge, you need to post pictures of you Maine Coons. If you have I couldn't find them.
