What Were They Thinking?
Bluenotes a Canadian retail chain which sells mostly jeans and t's to the youth of our Country printed a T-shirt with this slogan, "No means have aNOther drink." Needless to say there was a backlash among student and women's groups since this is a play on the "No Means No" anti-date rape and dating violence campaign of the Canadian Federation of Students. They have pulled the t-shirts. T-shirts they never should have printed up in the first place and they damn well know it.
In looking up a statistic on date rape in Canada I came across the Rape Statistics on the Women Against Violence Against Women website. They were a bit staggering to say the least. One of the most depressing and shocking stats was this line: "A survey on date rape showed that 60% of Canadian college-aged males indicated that they would commit sexual assault if they were certain they would not get caught." Please tell me this is not the case!
Anytime I see signs of spring I am happy. Spring and summer come here quick.
Hey Small Town Teacher not much longer until spring break. Hope you have your ferry ticket to Victoria. Oh, and make plans for a long leisurely chat at Starbucks and a movie!

Oh.......My......GOD!! That tshirt story is one of the most stupid things I've heard of in a long time. What a bunch of moronic arseholes! :O( Grrrrrr!
I love you photos btw. Its been so crazy lately, flowers blooming, and then today woke up and there is snow on the ground. Crazy!
Yeah sadly it probably is the case, the "kids today" lack any sort of sense of personal responsibility and if you don't get caught it ain't illegal.
Snowing here, big storm coming or some such.
I've come to realize I wait for spring all winter and once it comes I wish for summer. What a great time of year. Love the pictures.
Mellowlee, no kidding. It's such an obvious thing that you kind of wonder if they didn't do it for some free publicity. This weather has been a little insane all right!
Junky, hope the storm isn't too bad. Be careful on the roads! That statistic just floored me when I read it. I just kept thinking, "Were they drunk when they answered the darn thing?"
Busterp, my love of spring and summer is why I live on the West Coast. I did my time on the cold frozen prairies!
I saw those t-shirt photos in the paper and could not believe the attitude that obviously still exists. And to be supported by a firm like Bluenotes - disgusting.
Those photos are a sight for sore eyes, in my case, eyes that have been watching it snow for 3 days. sigh.
Barbara, oh I am sorry about the snow. I kind of forget about the rest of the country not enjoying green grass and flowers just yet! I was mad at Bluenotes because my favorite jeans are from there and I don't like the idea that I've been a longtime fan of their cheap jeans.
We had sun here today! I ditched the winter jacket for a brief, but glorious walk in the afternoon. Didn't last long though, cold again. But soon enough, soon enough!!
Allison, yahoo for sunny weather. I like how people's disposition improves with the appearance of the sun.
Tocatta,
No, I won't be coming to Victoria ... unless something goes very wrong on the mainland... I'll be visiting a "friend"... ahem. So if you get off the island ...
I'll be in your neck of the woods when my sister gives birth in mid-June.
Small town teacher, aww too bad for me. Well, I hope nothing goes horribly wrong for you so obviously I will have to wait until your sister gives birth.
it's weird, we were having a discussion on a similar subject matter on sunday nite. what are these people thinking? and why are they always so surprised when people complain? like telus and the porn downloads.
i love seeing your spring shots. my lawn is white with frost/snow.
668 we've been hearing about the snow your way. Hopefully that won't last too long. Large companies and their snafus always surprise me because you would think someone would have sense enough to realize, "Hey, that's not going to go over well!"
Leazwell, what indeed? We definitely need a widespread change in attitude and values.
i love coffee :-X
That shirt's message is absolutely hideous!
Your pictures are much appreciated... we're getting more snow dumped on us too... ugh.
E
Boo, me too! I am totally addicted to the stuff.
Women on the verge, have seen the news. My goodness the entire east has been hit by some kind of extreme weather yesterday.
Bluenotes also had a series of girls shirts last year that read, "I'm too pretty to do math" and others with a similar theme. Guess they didn't get enough bad press from that so they tried harder. Scumbags.
And in regards to the 60% college-aged males comment, those 60% are scumbags too. Future Bluenotes t-shirt designers.
John, I had not heard of their last year's campaign. One can only imagine where next year's t-shirt slogan is going to go. Yikes.
