First New York Now Here

I don't know if the two punks got their brilliant idea from watching the news but today a 90 year old woman was mugged by two "young punks" right here in my town. It's beyond infuriating. It's just so disgusting. There really aren't words to describe the utter contempt I have for them. I hope they manage to nab them before they harm anyone else.

A couple of years ago my mother, well into her seventies at the time, had three kids swarm her and they demanded her purse. She just looked at them and said, "Don't be ridiculous." I don't know if they were just so shocked not to have the purse automatically handed to them or if it was her no nonsense, "I used to be a teacher voice," that did it but thankfully they let her walk on by unharmed with purse still intact. She said she wasn't frightened until she got home and had time to think about what could have been.

Hurrah for your mother. She got guts and knew that not showing fear is three quarters of the battle.

Mugging a 90 year old is deparved. They should be forced to live in a house full of Giant Steroid Mutant Squirrels From Hell who feast upon human weasels and who have not eaten for a week.

I heard of someone in my school year who did something even worse to an 80 year old.

Yes, beggars belief.

But to end on a cheery note - three cheers to Toccata's mother - I'l toasting her with sake as I type.

tc...My mom had a very similar story. She heard someone in the house once and went to the top of the stairs to see who she thought was my cousin coming up them (it was dark and she was tired). As he got closer she quickly realized it wasn't my cousin and confronted him "you're not John, what do you want....GET OUT OF MY HOUSE!". He pushed past her at the top of the stairs and she began whacking at him, at which point he ran out the upstairs door. She chased him down the street in her housecoat, getting a very vivid description of his detailed jacket which helped police catch the teen (who was breaking into neighbourhood houses). We still laugh about the "what would you have done if you caught him?" scenario. Sorry, very long comment.

There's been a huge uptick in crime everywhere-- I heard a radio piece on the upswing of crime in London. Here in Chicago, my friend Mark was murdered last year for less than fifty dollars. It's tempting to go for the easy answers, like the glamorization of crime in music-- particularly rap music. But I suspect there's a parental issue going on, really.

Danny tagalog, I'll join you in the sharing of sake in a toast.

Kelly, having grown up with her no nonsense attitude I could see where they wouldn't dare cross her but obviously they weren't high on drugs which would have completely changed the scenario.

Dogga, I find it boggles the mind.

Boo, I'd probably end up throwing my purse at them and covering my eyes like that's going to save me!

Ethel, and they don't see or comprehend their actions as having consequences.

Deb, never apologise for your long comments. That was a great story. I can just see your mom flying down the street in her housecoat no less! Can you imagine our mothers together? Look out losers!

Johnny Yen, I believe parents play an enormous role in their children's behavior. I know it's not everything and some kids have awesome parents and still do horrendous things but man playing an active role in your child's life can sure go a long way to making sure you have a child that will be an asset to society and not the kind of kid that goes around creating chaos.

I love your mom!

Anyone who targets the old, the infirm, anyone really whom the bastards think won't fight back, deserves to something far worse than I could ever think to dole out.

that is damn scary, but huraaaay for your mom being so brave!

Toccata said...

Barbara, I agree on both points!

Mellowlee, us kids were like, whoa mom, way to go.

leazwell...how cool is that? Bet she went straight, if nothing else, out of embarrassment.

Toccata said...

Leazwell, that is an awesome comeback. I just love the pure no nonsense approach you took.

Deb, I couldn't agree with you more.

That is really disturbing that people do that.

I am so glad your mom was unharmed. You are right, it was probably her no nonsense approach that caused them to let her by.

Toccata said...

Faith, I agree. I just hope I could be as calm and cool in the same circumstance.

p.s. Faith do you have your own blog? I tried to search for you but with your name I'm coming up with too many hits. If you do leave your address and I will give you a visit.

No I don't have my own blog Toccata. If I get one I will let you know though:)
