Frantic Mad Rush
Have been having myself a lovely lazy Sunday. The weather was gorgeous so I spent most of it outdoors and then around 4:00 I started settling in for a lazy night of television. Anyone out there watch the English show, New Tricks? We get it on the Network Knowledge. But, I've gone off topic.
Just after 4:30 my nephew called asking if he could bring his girlfriend over for supper and then I could meet her. Supper! What the hell, no. I'm a mess, my place is a mess, and I have no idea what I would make for supper. But of course as I'm thinking that my mouth is somehow saying, "Sure, I'd love that. How does 6:00 sound?"
So I ran around like some frantic headless maniac and managed to get me and my place looking somewhat respectable. Supper was another matter. I think supper is a bust. I don't know it's not looking so good. I made an old standby that I thought could not go wrong. Apparently it could and it has.
Now, it's 6:18 the rice is cooked, getting cold and still no nephew. No amount of simmering is going to save the sauce but food is food. Oh, here they are.
Later: Mediocre food aside supper was a lot of fun. Now I am going to settle down for some lazy Sunday night viewing.
So what do you make as a last minute need to entertain meal? I need to start a list. Suggestions?

...Go out for food or order a take-away of course silly? Bachelor here speaking :0)
I'm afraid I am with Dogga on this one. I don't do last minute entertaining. I've actually gotten very good at saying, sorry that won't work, or meet you at Brewsters.
Although I can generally throw together a shrimp in garlic and wine sauce meal if I have shrimp in the freezer.
Try Barb's recipe for Lentil Curry Soup...does Food Porn still exist? It should be on there.
Glad the night wasn't a bust though, despite the food. Hey, it could have been worse...you could have made fondue ;)
Dogga, you are so right. I should have had something delivered. Far less stress!
Barbara, shrimp in garlic and wine sauce! Now, that sounds incredible and not like something one would just whip up at the last minute. I need the recipe.
Allison, lentil curry soup and red dahl are two standbys for me, unfortunately I found out his girlfriend does not like anything with curry or anything spicy which pretty much negates everything I know how to make. You cheeky little thing you. A fondue indeed! You have some memory.
I'm making typos all over the blogworld tonight.
Order in Chinese would be my first thought.
Although a big ol' pot of chili is a standby for me...the young'uns seem to love it.
I also just throw some potatoes in to bake and you can put the chili on them and top with cheese/onion. Not very fancy, but quick!!!
Or a curry dish is another "quickie"...chicken/potatoes.
I have no idea what I would make if I had suprise company for dinner....Probably order out as Dogga says. Those photos make me want to jump in the water and frolic! Really!!!! So gorgeous
Deb, I think I should have ordered in. Much less stress and then if the food is mediocre I least I have someone other than myself to blame!
Mellowlee, for some reason the idea of frolicing in the ocean made me laugh. This ocean is damn cold for any frolicing!
Like the pictures. Looks crisp.
I guess I'm not as formal (or because I'm a guy), but I'd fire up the Weber and make burgers and baked potatoes (parboiled first).
Or, agreeing with Deb, if I had lots of garden tomatoes left and some chili beans, I'd made a quick chili like concoction, also with burgers.
Busterp, next time I think I'll just hire you to cater to my dinner guests. Could you pack along your horseshoes?
Hi, found your site through wayward son. Thought I would say hi. I saw your pictures of the ocean and thought, 'my, that looks familiar.'
Something fast and easy for supper: Mac and cheese, but not when I have guests, just for myself (right, when I'm busy, it's what I end up eating). But something that I like and is also sort of easy it's pasta with pesto. And I add tomatoes that I cut and baked in olive oil. or the tiny tomatoes, backed in the oven with balsamic vinegar on.
those pictures are great!
Mantramine, hello there. Thanks for stopping by.
Evelyne, your comment made me laugh. Memories. Who has not started out living on their own with the help of Kraft Dinner? I like adding green onion and tomatoes for colour!
It's funny Toccata, but as a kid I liked Kraft Dinner, but not anymore, so it's mac and cheese the way my dad taught me to do (and he's not really what I would call a cook). My mom challenged my brother (the one in university) and I: don't eat Kraft Dinner when you're living by yourself, so far, it worked (she's helping however, bringing us food when she comes!)
Lke your you wave snaps - soothing.
