January 1, 2008 A New Year Begins
January 1 has never marked the beginning of a new year for me. As a child the start of school in September always marked a new beginning and a time for heightened expectations of what the new year might bring. Now as an adult my work is also defined by the academic calendar and so I find I still have not made the switch to January 1 as being the start of something new. I always feel smack dab in the middle of the school year so nothing major is going to change. If my life is going to take a drastic turn it will have to wait until the last final in June is written.
This morning I got up although not quite as early as intended and went for a walk along the ocean. I sort of missed the beautiful sunrise which I could see glimpses of as I walked down towards the ocean but sadly by the time I got there all that was left was a thin band of pinkish light where the ocean meets the land along the horizon. So yet another ocean shot will have to wait for another day.

I don't know why exactly but I liked this mushroom. When I look at it my mind's eye sees a great opportunity for a jumping off point for an abstract painting. Think maybe I had better get my paints out later and start playing around.
Flowers in bloom on January 1st. Not bad!

Best wishes everyone and here's a toast to 2008.

January has never marked the start of the year for me either. However I use it as a regroup and what I need to get myself through the next 9 months. Just looking at my calender, basically I am booked through then. 2008 shall be all about my dissertation.

The photo of the mushrooms feels like it should be under the sea. Very cool.

Happy 2008!

Allison, I realize that this is not a question you will want to answer on an open forum such as this but have you an idea of what you want to write on? If memory serves me right I told you this before but the best advice I was given was not to do it on something you love because you will inevitably hate it by the time you are done.

September has always felt like the true new year to me as well, probably because I never really left academia.

But what spectacular photos, sunrise or no sunrise. When things get back into a normal routine around here, I shall definitely try dabbling in some of the art ideas you mentioned to me.

I have no idea. :( Hopefully once I make my way through the assignment I am doing now, which is due next week I will have time to focus on research. I will keep you advice in mind, thank-you!

You and Mel are meeting up? Yay! Full documentation is expected you know.

Allison, Mel and I are headed to the Georgia O'Keefe exhibit together! So all I can say is there had better not be a stupid snowstorm or ferries cancelled due to wind!

Ooh, that exhibition ends next week! I hope you too have fun and be sure to report back. :)
