Mixed Media with Kathy Guthrie

Last fall I took a class in mixed media with Kathy Guthrie. The class was fantastic. I always judge a class by how much work I end up doing between sessions and with her I found I was wanting to continuously work and try new things.

After the mixed media class I ended up taking a class on lettering using the uncial script. Until this class I had never had any interest in calligraphy whatsoever. I took it more because it worked within my schedule and I love to make cards but have terrible handwriting. I am now hooked.
Because of this class I started blog hopping looking for blogs about the subject and I happened along the blog of WordMarks. The author is always posting projects that she has done on her own, with friends or as class assignments. This past week she was given a class assignment to make a daily sketch with paint. I rather liked this idea and decided I would do it as well. My plan was to post what I have done but I did not think far enough in advance and of course my paintings are too large for the printer and the photographs look in a word, weird. So instead of what I did this week I am posting something I did while taking the mixed media class.

I rather liked these mainly because I suck at collage so getting anything in that medium that didn't horrify me was a pleasant surprise.

You have no idea how difficult I am finding the last step of publish post. I have a fear of my work being scoffed at or ridiculed. I seriously do not know how artists handle the idea of people critiquing their work! Oh well, scoff if you must.

Those are brilliant! I am throughly impressed, I am quite taken with the last one (must be the purple). You're much to hard on yourself about your work though - I have the card you made for me displayed on my bookshelf and everyone always comments on it! :)

Allison, thanks. I know my confidence is something I have to work on. It's weird because in some things I think I'm over confident but other areas I'm just a basketcase.

I love this! The mix of postage stamps and coins speaks to a simpler less hurried time somehow and the colours are just divine, restful yet evocative.

Lorraine thanks for giving me the incentive to post.

Barbara, now I'm just kind of blushing with embarassment. I wish I could handle both criticism and praise a little better.

You need to build that confidence tc because your work is fantastic. I think you have a natural gift and should show it more often, to get the positive feedback that you deserve.

Seriously...I'm still blown away by the cards you sent. I show them to everyone...."see what my internet friend made for me?...."

Deb, thanks. I think your comment just might garner you another card!

Hello there Gifted Typist. Thanks for stopping by. Your post on the new and horrible use of the word Canadian certainly created quite the dialogue.
