Sammy Jo
Sadly, Sammy Jo had to be put down this past Tuesday. It was not unexpected for his health had quickly deteriorated in the past two weeks. He had finally used up all nine lives and then some.
I did not mean for this post to be sad because one thing is for certain, from the moment that cat showed up in my back yard all bedraggled and scruffed up he brought with him nothing but joy. I always thought of him as a precious gift. So I will now relate Sammy Jo's last kick of the paint can. Last Friday I was painting on my art table and Sammy Jo was sleeping on the blanket that I always set up on the corner of the table for him. So I'm painting away when that cat wakes up stretches clear across the table sending tubes of paint everywhere. He then tried to drink from the dirty paint water. I was trying to shoo him away while telling him he can't drink paint. Suddenly he sprang onto my lap and down onto the floor and off he went toppling over the jar of water and sending everything on the table crashing down in the process.
I spent the next few minutes mopping up the dirty paint water and when I finally took my destroyed, soggy painting to the garbage I passed the bathroom and noticed bright crimson red slashes of paint on the toilet. I then looked down for the first time to see a trail of red paw prints leading all the way back to the livingroom. Guess what I ended up spending 20 minutes trying to scrub off?
In the evening when I went to sit down at the kitchen table I discovered three bright red paw prints on the chair.
One of my students said he figured Sammy Jo had a list of things he needed to destroy before he could leave this world! I rather liked that idea.
This place is going to be a little dull without Sammy Jo's antics livening things up. The day he moved in was one of the luckiest days of my life. Miss him.

I'm so sorry to hear about Sammy Jo's passing. Pets are family and its never easy when they go.
Your post made me tear, but I loved this line - "One of my students said he figured Sammy Jo had a list of things he needed to destroy before he could leave this world! I rather liked that idea."
Cats walk to their own agenda, but I think Sammy Jo was a top instigator in that field. It may not have been on his lists of things to destroy, but reading your posts on him always made me smile/laugh and perhaps warm my heart to cats. Which, for me, would be destroying years of hatred.
I would just like to say I am raising a glass to Sammy Jo tonight to celebrate all the laughs I have shared with you when I would read about his antics. I'm sending my thoughts to you, my dear!
Sorry about Sammy Jo. I'll toast him too. Just thinking of that, this AM I filled a little mineral water container with some milk for work (I occasionally like with a sandwich). Being in a rush as usual, I left it sitting on my kitchen table with no top on it, the same table all the cats walk on when no one is home. What are the odds it will still be standing when I get home? Ha.
Allison, thanks. Turning you into at least a partial cat fan might not have been on Sammy Jo's list but it most definitely is on mine. Come on over to the dark side.
Small town teacher nest time you are in town hopefully we can raise a glass together!
Busterp, I'm thinking you are in for a bit of a clean up after work! Welcome to the weekend.
sorry about sammy jo
Kelly, thanks. Give Jake a hug for me.
I'm sorry about Sammy Jo my friend.
I visited his kitty blog just now and was looking at those santa hat photos you took for me last year. So cute!!
I will miss him too!!
XOXO
Mellowlee, be sure and give Loki and kiss on the head for me.
Sammy Jo was such a wonderful companion, I think, and like all great companions made you a little crazy at times, but was never boring. Although I never had the pleasure of meeting him, I feel I knew him through your wonderful tales (I will never forget the peeing on your student's knapsack incident), and I will never forget him.
God speed, Sammy Jo.
Barbara, thanks. Thanks for everything.
I'm so sorry to hear about it. I loved your Sammy Jo's stories, he seemed to be such a great cat.
I'm sorry to hear about your loss.
I think his soul lives on in one of our cats, Mingus, aka "Fatboy." He was the one who knocked a glass off of a counter a few months ago in the middle of the night, waking me up, making me think someone was breaking in the back door of our home. When I ran to the kitchen to brain whoever was breaking into my house, I saw a black and white fat flash go by and realized I was standing barefooted in my underwear in a sea of broken glass.
A couple of weeks ago, I came home from work late at night and tripped over him. They're always good for an adventure, aren't they?
Evelyne, thanks. He was a great cat that's for sure.
Johnny Yen knowing how much you "love" cats I think it's a good thing that Mingus manage to elude you on the night of the broken glass fiasco!
even tho' i never met sammy jo, i feel like i knew him thru your posts. he was such a rebel rouser.
i am glad he gave you one last sammy jo whirlwind before he left.
Sorry to hear about Sammy Jo.
I know how much he ment to you.
What i have learned from reading about him is that know matter how perfect the world is or we want it to be there is always that trouble maker to makes us scream...then laugh.
With you,
Mathew John
Aww, RIP Sammy Jo!
668, thanks. Give Goober an extra treat for me, like maybe some peanut butter or pizza.
Mathew John that cat certainly did make me scream and laugh and shout the odd swear word all right!
Dooga, aww is right.
May flights of angels sing thee to thy rest, Sammy Jo.
oddly enough, goober has had pizza and peanut butter today.
i love the kitty in a toilet picture.
668 I always knew that Goober was a lucky dog. Well since he's getting treats here's hoping you at least got some chocolate preferably not chocolate gum!
Sorry Gifted Typist I kind of missed you there. I was playing with my blackberry at the time. Sammy Jo would like it if the angels sounded like Jewel but absolutely no trumpets!
So sorry to hear M. SJ was my fave pet to visit in blogsphere. Miss him :(
Boo, thanks. He certainly was a great cat.
I'm sorry to hear about Sammy Jo.
Samy, thank you. I look forward to seeing more of pictures from your lovely province.
Oh tc....I'm so sorry. I haven't been here in awhile (I don't know why I thought you weren't blogging!).
Sammy Jo was beautiful and put a smile on my face more than once with the pictures and stories you shared with us here.
So sad to read this...my mouth literally dropped when I clicked on your blog.
Hang in there my friend...I know it's tough.
xo
Deb, well my blogging has definitely taken a nose dive this past year. Thanks for the kind words for Sammy Jo.
You shall have to get another when the time is right. They are simply a necessary thing.
Leazwell, absolutely. I fully intend to open my home to another cat but just not quite yet. Although I don't think I will be waiting long.
